Saying goodbye is so very hard to do. This time though it is not a family member or friend, but a dynamic character whose presence I grew to enjoy page after page.
This engaging book took place during the German occupation of France. Isabelle Mauriac was ever breaking rules and illusive since her mother's death and her father's rejection of her when he turned to alcohol to ease his grief.
Her sister Vianne, was a young wife when her sister his thrust upon her, so she too sends her back to boarding schools for she felt drained and did not have the will to contend with her ways.
As a result, Isabelle dreams of living a life of purpose and adventure. She shortly found her challenges and adventures during the years when the French nearly lost their country.
You will enjoy the intrigue even to the end of the book. There is a bit of romance as well, but more of it portrays the life for the French during this time as the Third Reich squeezed, destroyed, looted. and murdered innocents. But Isabelle found a way to fight back.
Very insightful and gripping. I highly recommend this historical fiction.
